What my site is about

Basically it is partly an expression of my interest of all things German; however my main aim is to entice students to learn German. This site will list reasons why German is a valuable and interesting language to learn. I will also list my expectations for students who attend my classes. This site also includes links to websites that I find intriguing, entertaining and of course educational.

Why learn German?
  • 58% of Europeans surveyed indicated that German was the most useful language in Europe. (Source-Public Radio International's Marketplace Morning Edition)
  • Many Great thinkers and artists thought and wrote in German: Einstein, Freud, Nietzsche, Kant, Beethoven, Marx, Kafka, Goethe---and many more. Students of Music, Law, Philosophy, Religion, Psychology, History, Political Science, and Engineering find German to be valuable for their studies.
  • German is the third-largest economy in the world, and is the largest exporter.
  • German is the second most common language on the Internet with 13% of all websites (compared to 5% in Japanese, 4% in French, and 2% in Spanish).
  • German is closely related to English and 36 other "Germanic" languages, Afrikaans, Danish, Dutch, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish and Yiddish. Learning German will give you important insights into the history and structure of English.

 Some similarities include:

Vater = father,Mutter = mother, Katze = cat, Buch = book, Milch = milk, Wasser = water

Walter Dexel, Komposition, 1924

"Eine neue Art von Denken ist notwendig, wenn die Menschheit weiterleben will" (Albert Einstein)

My Classroom Expectations

  2. Homework should be completed and ready to submit on time.
  3. Students should bring all materials required for class.
  4. Students should be ready to participate and lend their talents to the German atmosphere.
  5. Courtesy, kindness, compassion and acceptance are greatly encouraged.
  6. Dishonorable words and actions will not be tolerated, this includes swearing, cheating, lying, stealing, intimidation and intentional disruptions.
